I suppose it would seem ugly to someone who doesn't 'get' D/s -- it would have freaked me out completely not that many years ago. (I'm remembering a friend of mine who defines edgeplay as anything that "an ordinary person, on seeing it, would immediately want to beat the crap out of whoever's doing it".) (Then he looks at me and tries to make me feel guilty.)
