I don't expect to get much useful done between now and year-end, so prompt me!

Jack/Daniel is default mode, but I'm down for gen or alternate pairings. You'll receive at least 100 words.

Winter themes, Christmas, New Year's are all seasonally appropriate, but anything goes. Well, maybe not death!fic. This time around. ;-)

Celebrate the Season

Okay, it was a tree-lighting ceremony. When Jack looked around at his team, his wasn't the only face scrunched up in confusion. "I thought we decided they weren't from Earth?"

Daniel blinked at him. "I think the six fingers on the women, the shape of the heads, and the eyes that are all the exact same shade of green answer that question."

"Also, the breasts on the males," Teal'c added.

Jack winced. He kept trying not to notice that.

The mayor moved to the dais in the middle of the square, and spoke. "It is the turning of the page, the time of birth, when light enters the world."

Strands of red lights sprang into life, traversing the giant evergreen tree from base to tip. A strand of green lights lit, one by one, spiraling down from tip to base.

"Joy to the world," the mayor said.

"Joy!" the people shouted in response.

Sam's mouth dropped open as a zigzag of white lights began to glow.

"O, most holy night."

"Night most holy."

Daniel's mouth was open now.

"Darkness into light."

"We welcome the light."

A star beamed radiantly atop the tree.

"Whoa," Jack said, feeling a shiver run down his spine. "Daniel?"

"No," Daniel said. "Really. It can't be."

"Can't be Christmas?" Sam said, almost in a whisper.

"Then what the…heck?" Jack asked, not much louder.

A choir of children burst into song. It was nothing about saviors, or mangers. Or jolly fat men, or presents, or snow. They sang of the sky, and the stars, and the movement of the planets, of the division of the year, the seasons, of day and night.

"It is solstice," Teal'c said reverently.

Sam's "Oh!" intermingled with Jack's "Ah."

Daniel looked at Teal'c consideringly and opened his mouth.

Jack put a hand on Daniel's shoulder. "Later." Although he wouldn't mind knowing himself how the concept of celebrating solstice coexisted alongside faux gods like Apophis in the Jaffa universe. He looked up at the starry, clear, midnight sky. "Just enjoy."

"I resolve to gain weight," Sam said, waving her champagne glass in a reckless arc.

"I'm going to eat unhealthy foods," Janet responded. "Lots of butter and salt."

"No sugar?"

"Sure, sugar."

Sam snickered. "You called me 'sugar'."

"You like 'honey' better?"

"Sometimes you are so Southern."

Janet beamed. "You like me Southern?"

"I like you every way." Sam felt her face flush. Oops. "I resolve…I resolve to disobey Colonel O'Neill at every opportunity."

Janet giggled and swayed toward her. "I'm putting that one on my list, too."

"You don't have to obey him. He has to obey you!"

"Ain't it grand?" Janet grabbed Sam's shoulder and shook it.

"It must be," Sam agreed, admiring the way Janet's eyes sparkled when she laughed. "What else should we resolve?"

"We should resolve to do this a whole lot more." Janet leaned into Sam and clinked their glasses carefully.

"Champagne every night!"

"I'll drink to that!"

They drank. Their glasses were empty. The bottle was empty, too. Just like the first bottle had been.

"Aw," Sam said, setting her glass down on the table next to Janet's a little heavily. "I guess the party's about over."

"Not necessarily."

"Hmm?" Sam turned her head and peered at Janet.

Janet put a hand on her knee. "Sugar," she drawled.

Sam held her breath.

"I resolve to break a few Air Force regulations. Because you're worth it." Janet stroked Sam's cheek a little clumsily. "And because we deserve to be happy, damn it." She leaned in very close. "Honey?"

Sam found herself nodding, found her arms lifting, found her head tilting. Found her lips on Janet's.

Found the room spinning, just a little. In the good way. In the way it happened sometimes, when something was right.

It was going to be an awesome year.

"I know you said you didn't want to do anything special for Valentine's Day."

Jack looked down at Daniel's present. "You said you got that."

"I do. Just…open it."

Jack shrugged and ripped the wrapping paper off. "The hell?"

"My favorite holiday is any one with an excuse to indulge in outrageous quantities of chocolate."

"It's an Easter bunny!"

"Totally non-Valentine's related!"

Jack snorted and held it out. "Here, then!"

Daniel grinned. "Oh, I brought my own." He produced Hershey's chocolate syrup from his jacket pocket.

Jack's eyes lit up.

Yeah, he knew where Daniel planned to put it…

"Candles?" Jack considered them. "Is this a subtle hint that I'm not the most romantic fella you've known?" He closed the door behind Daniel.

Daniel grinned. "No. Candles are a traditional Coptic Christmas present, to commemorate Joseph keeping Mary warm by lighting lamps."

"Sounds like a good way to burn down a stable," Jack commented, leading the way to the kitchen.

Daniel sniffed the air and followed his nose to the pot on the stove. "Mulled wine!"

"Gløgg. It's tres, tres Norwegian."

"And Norwegian is tres, tres Minnesotan."

"Yasureyoubetcha. Minnesota's the Norwegian capital of the United States." Jack took the grocery sack dangling from Daniel's hand. "Whatcha got in here?" He set it on the table and began emptying it.

"Qurban." Daniel touched the cellophane-wrapped round loaf of bread. "Traditional on religious occasions. I thought it would be good with coffee in the morning, but it'll probably go pretty well with your gløgg, too." He shrugged out of his coat and draped it over the back of a chair.

"Excellent. Rice? You're not making rice pudding, are you?"

"Uh, no. Why?"

"That's traditional with gløgg. I hate it."

"No, it's part of the fatta I'm making. Rice, pita bread, garlic and vinegar, and a spicy lamb broth."

Jack tried to stop it, but he could feel his face fall, and Daniel could see it falling.

"What?"

"Lamb's kinda up there with rice pudding."

"Oh. Oh, well. We can use something you have around the house. Chicken, beef, pork. Anything will work."

Jack walked to the fridge and put his hand up to open the freezer. "Hey!" He dropped his hand and turned. "How about pork sausage? It's spicy. Got cloves and cardamom and allspice." He opened the fridge door instead.

Daniel scratched his head. "What'll happen if you boil it?"

"I always boil it for a few minutes before I fry it." Jack turned with a plate holding a long coil of pale white sausage.

Daniel raised his eyebrows.

"I know," Jack said. "It doesn't look very appetizing right now..."

"No, no," Daniel soothed. "What is it, anyway?"

"Medisterpølse. Think it'll work?"

"Mmm."

"Is that a 'yes'?"

"Oh, yes. I was just thinking."

"Anything you want to share with the class?" Jack asked, giving the gløgg a careful stir.

"Oh, just, you said the sausage had cardamom. The fatta has cardamom, too."

"So does the gløgg." Jack pointed over his shoulder with a thumb.

"Which is going to go so well with the qurban. I saw a cinnamon stick there in the pot."

"Yes…"

Daniel rummaged for what Jack had missed in the bottom of the sack, and held it up. "One goes in the fatta, too."

Jack huffed a little laugh. "Who'd a thunk?"

"That Egypt and Norway, or Minnesota, would have so much in common?"

"Well," Jack said, pulling Daniel into his arms, "Stranger things have happened."

"Like us throwing together a Christmas meal full of our respective childhood memories, and everything working so well together?"

Jack nuzzled Daniel's neck. "Like us working so well together?" He could feel Daniel's smile against his temple.

"Like complementary spices."

Jack worked his way up to Daniel's ear. "Explains why I'm always so hungry for you, I guess." He squeezed Daniel's butt.

Daniel turned his head and sought Jack's mouth. Jack saw no point in playing hard to get. He fumbled to the side and turned off the burner under the gløgg. It would keep.

Something else was starting to simmer.

Daniel: Jack, would you stop!
Jack: They killed two of my men!
Daniel: Yes, they did. But not all these people are responsible for that. And even the ones that were, were…just doing what they believed was right.
Jack: I really don't care.
Daniel: Well, I do. And leaving right now would be irredeemable.


When Daniel opened his front door, he was clearly surprised to see Jack. He just stood there with raised eyebrows.

"Knock, knock," Jack said.

Pressing his lips together, Daniel motioned him inside. Surprised and speechless. It couldn't last. They headed for the living room. Daniel settled himself on the couch, where he'd obviously been when the doorbell rang.

Jack sank into his favorite chair and gestured at the papers and books strewn over the coffee table. "Hope I'm not interrupting."

"It doesn't matter."

"Sweet." Jack kneaded the arms of the chair and looked around the room idly.

"I'm surprised you're here."

The words were mild enough. Jack looked at him. The expression matched. "I got that." He waved a hand. "I was half expecting you to show up at my place."

Daniel blinked once, twice. "I didn't think you'd want my company."

"Why not?"

Daniel tilted his head and gave him an exasperated look. "I didn't think you'd want company, period."

Jack gave him a quick half-smile. "But you're special." He could tell Daniel didn't believe that, but was pleased to hear it just the same. "I'm serious."

"That's a first," Daniel mumbled.

"Mm."

"So did you come here to talk?"

"Why?" Jack coughed. "Did you have something you wanted to say?"

Daniel eyed him, undoubtedly trying to gauge his intentions. If Jack were entirely sure what they were, he might've offered Daniel a clue. He only knew that he didn't want to be alone and that Daniel was the one he needed to be with. He tried looking pleasant and open, but that only made Daniel narrow his eyes, so he stopped.

Daniel nodded and pushed up his glasses. "I do have a question."

Jack gestured with one hand. He had a few questions he'd been asking himself, on an endless loop. It would be interesting to see if Daniel's question was something different.

"I was wondering how you…turned on a dime, about the K'tau people."

Jack shifted in his seat. "What do you mean?"

Daniel inhaled and exhaled. "Do you remember what you said to Malchus?"

"When?"

"When you were…" Daniel made a fist.

"Beating him up?" Jack drummed his fingers. "Not really," he admitted.

"You said two things. That he had killed your people, and that he had screwed his entire planet."

"Right. Okay."

Daniel leaned forward. "You cared that he had condemned his people, destroyed our chance to save them."

Jack saw where this was going. He resisted the urge to lean back in his chair, away from Daniel and his next words. He'd invited the question, after all. And he was trained not to let body language give him away.

"And then not ten minutes later, you were ready to just walk away. Abandoning them to their fate." Daniel looked away, and back. "You said it plainly enough. You just didn't care."

Jack nodded shortly. "And your question is?"

"I guess I just don't want to believe it."

Jack's lips parted.

"So I guess I don't have a question after all. I just want you to tell me that I'm right."

"Aren't you always?" Jack winced apologetically. He didn't need the look on Daniel's face to tell him that this was an inappropriate time for levity.

"Was I this time?"

Jack puffed out air. "I was trying to stop caring."

"Why?" It was a truly foreign concept to Daniel.

"So it wouldn't hurt so much. So I could blame them for my failure to save them."

"Your failure."

"As team leader. As mission commander." Jack stood up from his chair and paced across the room. "I'd lost good men, for nothing. Nothing. I should have brought in Marines. I should have protected that site and the people working on that damned rocket. I knew Malchus was a nutjob. I should have…"

"Predicted the future? Foreseen the unthinkable?"

Jack shrugged stiffly.

"The rocket might not have worked anyway. Malchus might have been stopped, and your men might still be alive, but K'tau could have been lost all the same."

Jack exhaled and sank back into his chair. "Yeah."

"So. I was right."

Jack shut his eyes. "I cared that I couldn't help those people and that they were all going to die. Yes, Daniel. You were right."

"You knew they would never evacuate the planet."

His eyes flew open. "Now you're giving me too much credit."

Daniel frowned. "What do you mean?"

Jack scrubbed his hands through his hair. "I never even thought to ask them." Daniel made a shocked, confused face that would have been funny under different circumstances. "Because I'm not that bright, okay?"

"That's ridiculous."

"Well."

"You weren't thinking straight. Your men. The…pointlessness of it all." Daniel. Reasonable Daniel. Trying to understand. Trying to make it all right.

"It's my goddamn job to think straight, especially when everything is turning to shit." Jack hit the arm of the chair with a clenched fist, twice, and took a deep breath. "I'm not supposed to lose it the way I did."

"No," Daniel agreed, quickly. "You scared me."

Jack let out the breath. "One more reason I'm not supposed to lose it. It's bad for morale." He eyed Daniel. "You didn't act scared."

"I couldn't," Daniel said simply.

Jack nodded slowly. "Good for you. Someone needed to keep their head. Sorry."

"Good for you, too, Jack."

Jack made a face. "For what? I did just about everything wrong."

"You listened to your team members. You recognized that there were legitimate alternatives. You pulled it back together." Daniel smiled at him. "I wouldn't call that wrong."

Jack opened his mouth.

"And don't say too little, too late."

Jack closed his mouth. Opened it again. "Things may have worked out, but it wasn't because of anything I did. Carter, maybe. You, maybe. Probably."

"Probably not. It was probably what you said. The Asgard sneaking in the back door we left open. Sam gets the credit for that."

"That's not what you said on the planet."

"Well, I was just saying that we would probably never know for sure. Because the Asgard would probably think they were violating the Treaty if they told us that they…violated the Treaty."

"That's a lot of 'probably's."

"Well, the point is…"

"The point is, that you very possibly deserve more credit than we'll probably ever know."

"Jack."

"Daniel?"

"Jack, you can't honestly think that my prayer had anything to…"

"Hey, you were the one who brought up the possibility."

"I certainly wasn't talking about myself. I was talking about the ongoing, devout prayers of the K'tau people. You should know that."

Daniel's scowl only served to egg Jack on. "Hey, I only know what I saw. You prayed, and the sun came out. I told you you were special."

Daniel rolled his eyes. "Okay, now you're just messing with me."

"You won't even entertain the possibility?"

"No." Daniel shook his head. "Hey, maybe it was Sam! I'll bet she was praying all along. And why would any deity listen to me and not to all those other people, when I'm not even a religious man?"

"Because you're a good person. Because you care about people. And stuff like justice, and decency." Daniel opened his mouth, but Jack raised a finger to silence him and continued, "Because you wouldn't let me do something 'irredeemable'."

They looked at each other for a long moment and Daniel's expression softened. "No, and I never will. Not as long as you're willing to listen to me. Because you're a better man than that, Jack."

Jack doubted it. But as long as Daniel had that much faith in him, maybe there was still a chance he could live up to it one day. So he just smiled and shook his head, and bit back the words that were on the tip of his tongue.

That's where you're wrong.

The night air of Abydos, especially out here away from the walls of the city, was what Danyel had called 'crisp.' Shau'ri halted, gathering her cloak more tightly about her. He had described to her how weather could be so cold, so 'crisp', that water turned hard and soft rain turned to flakes of white. She had believed him, but could not imagine such things, child of the desert that she was.

Her demon had seen them, though. Shau'ri had seen the memory. She could picture ground whiter than sand, hear the crunching sound of footfalls, feel the white rain sting her cheeks.

Against the black sky, the glittering stars looked as cold as specks of hard water, although Danyel had assured her that they were in truth as hot as the sun of Abydos. Shivering, Shau'ri turned her back to the brilliant cluster of specks marking the place she knew the monster Apophis to be, and sought out the star called Sol that lit Danyel's home world.

When morning came, Kasuf would have the chappa'ai uncovered. Danyel would come. If he lived, he would come.

Her hands covered her stomach. He would come, and he would see. What then?

Time off for the holidays in the D/s Jack and Daniel verse.

Jack decides to put in the right kind of effort - the kind that got him high marks for following orders ...you know, back when he used to follow orders. He want to give Daniel exactly what Daniel want, all the things he hesitates or tries to negotiate about. ...or at least what he thinks Daniel wants.

Daniel doesn't know how to ski. Jack decides to remedy this issue, with interesting results.

You can show the skiing or not, as you wish, but I'm most interested in the direction the "results" take you.,,,

Already these first sentences are so them! I love how their conversations unfolds, and how they both have valid points on their side, but nevertheless they listen to the arguments of the other - that's more what most people do.

So I think that not only Daniel is special - but Daniel could say the same about Jack. *g*

Jack instinctively knew that talking with Daniel would be helpful, and Daniel gave him the space to come to that conclusion. Even before they start talking they're showing each other respect! They're both very special, clearly. :-)
