How's about that weather? and Pimping a fandom

I can't believe it.  I just took the dog for a nice walk, at night, in the first week of January, and I was wearing a cardigan over a t-shirt.  Our average high at this time of year is 30 degrees Fahrenheit.  If this is global warming I'll take it.

And just in case any of you are looking for a new fandom *g*, mandc_read is just getting underway.  Remember the Russell Crowe movie 'Master and Commander'?  Interested in the Napoleonic Wars?  Like sailors in tight pants?  Love slash?  *g*

We are reading Patrick O'Brian's 20 books featuring the exploits of Royal Navy Captain "Lucky" Jack Aubrey and his ship's surgeon/naturalist/spy (and particular friend) Doctor Stephen Maturin.  At one chapter a week, this community should be around for awhile.  ;-)

Quick!  Run to your library and check out "Master and Commander".  You'll figure out soon enough if you want to invest in your own copy.  Discussion of Chapter One will commence this weekend.

I *can't* read a single chapter. If I pick up the first book, I won't stop until the last one's finished. I'm nothing if not obsessive. :-)

I'm halfway thru book 18 - but I've been deliberately making them last, since I came aboard after Mr. O'Brian's death and knew there was a finite number to be enjoyed.

I've told myself that this year I'd read more actual books (not that I'll give up the fanfic) and I had already bought about 15 or so to start me off. Then I read this post the other day and stopped at the book store on my way home. *sigh*

I read chapter 1 last night and I'll sign up over at the comm tonight when I get home. I'm looking forward to this as I've never read this series before. :^)

EDIT: Never seen the movie either, so this will all be new to me.

Oh, YAY!!! You liked it! Welcome aboard! It's a really fun group of people and the books are absolutely fantastic.

Not to mention the abundance of slashiness in amongst the sea battles and intrigues. ;-)

(The movie actually took bits and parts from several of the books, plus changed things around so that the enemy in the movie was French, not American as in "The Far Side of the World". I'm sure you'll be driven to rent it before too long. LOL)
