Chicago 2012: Some semblance of a con report, part the first
To be honest, I doubt I'm going to remember very much at this point! But I wouldn't have remembered all that much if I'd done it sooner, anyway. I did take notes during some sessions, but I ran out of energy for doing that, plus sometimes the lights were turned down too low. Anywho...
Friday, August 17th
Arrived at the Westin. As I walked in there was a very long line of people waiting in the con registration line, which had just opened. After I checked into my room (lovely Preferred Customer room, for some unknown reason), I headed back downstairs and found there was no line whatsoever. Yay! I bought a Preferred ticket, which got me a reserved seat in the theatre, admission to the Cabaret, and autographs from Jewel Staite, Cliff Simon, Tony Amendola, Joe Flanigan, and Paul McGillion. I also bought an autograph ticket for Michael Shanks.
The first guest appearance was Chuck Campbell (Chuck the Technician on Atlantis) at 1:45. It was probably at this point that I discovered I'd been assigned a seat that had been assigned to somebody else six months ago! I wound up sitting right behind him. He was the first fan I talked to, and a trend was begun, because I think most of the people I spent time talking to during the weekend were men! Well, that's probably an exaggeration. Maybe it was 50/50 by the end of the con, but it was all men to start with.
After Chuck, there was a trivia game at 2:40. I can't remember why I missed that. *checks journal* I see I was in the lobby and posting to my journal at 2:56, so I guess that was more important. *g* At 3:20 Dan Payne and Alex Zahara were on stage. See, now, I don't remember a word Chuck said, although he was very funny, and all I remember about these guys is that they talked about how they got into acting in prosthetic makeup. Oh, and Alex's favorite of all his SG-1 roles was the hippie in "1969".
4:10 intermission before 4:50 Robert Picardo. This must be when I wandered into the bar and set about bonding with the nice bartender over beer selections. He liked my taste. (We talked several times over the weekend, including one conversation about Richard Dean Anderson on General Hospital!) Robert Picardo came onstage singing a song he probably does at every convention, set to La Donna E Mobile, which includes a line about Stargate paychecks not quite stacking up against Star Trek paychecks. *g* I remember he talked about how Woolsey started out as a total dick, but they tried to clean him up a little with each subsequent appearance on SG-1. From dick to jerk you feel sorry for, to jackass who's at least trying to do the right thing.
But Picardo was still shocked when he was offered the job on Atlantis. "But everyone hates me!" "We'll fix that." And they fixed it by giving him character quirks, and showing how he was a fish out of water (trapped in the briefing room after everyone else left because he couldn't figure out how to get the doors to open, etc.)
5:50 You Pitch It! Fans got up on stage and pitched their wacko ideas for a new Stargate feature film. It was just about as bad as you would expect... But a guy I'd been talking to in registration didn't show up, after I'd let him practice his pitch on me. His wasn't bad! Still wacko, of course, but well presented and intriguing. Something about Eli onboard Destiny trying to get that last stasis pod fixed, when suddenly Thor beams in from some other point in time and says, "We can get you back home, but first you have to do something for us." The pitch ended there, which was wise, and exactly the way a pitch works!
Then there was a long break before the 8:30 Cabaret. I'm sure I spent it in the lobby catching up on LJ/DW, and then in the bar eating dinner. (This was before I learned that the lobby WiFi was also available in the bar, which I found very convenient. *g*) I should point out that during these breaks there are still things going on if you have purchased tickets for them. Autographs, photo ops, and Meet and Greets are taking place. Anyway, the Cabaret was Chuck Campbell telling jokes and funny stories, and Robert Picardo and Tony Amendola basically reading stuff to us. Not exactly exciting, but it wasn't boring either.
At 10 pm was Karaoke. I didn't stay too long. Mostly I'd never heard the songs that fans were singing, so even if they were good singers it wasn't all that interesting for me. And when the fellow sitting in front of me got up and sang for a second time, that was my cue to escape. He was utterly awful. LOL.
I went back to the bar, and got into a conversation with the couple sitting next to me, who weren't attending the con. Gorgeous young woman, strikingly handsome man, dressed to the nines, clearly not from my usual social stratum. One of them asked what "Stargate" was all about and we ended up talking for quite a while. At one point the woman said, "I need a hobby. I need something I would spend a weekend at a convention for. But I'm shallow." I laughed and said, "Yes, we're so deep, with all our television watching!"
I finished the night just after midnight in the 24-hour Business Center, because bright lights and a proper work surface made it much easier to type up a final report for my journals. Went to bed. Finally went to sleep after wrestling with the pillows for a while.
Saturday, August 18th
Alarm went off. Hit the snooze button. Failed to snooze. Got up. I'd brought a cooler and some food with me, so I had a hard boiled egg and some kringle for breakfast. At 10:15 I was in the vendor room, buying six photos for my autograph sessions.
10:35 Tony Amendola and Cliff Simon come onstage. I took some notes! Tony joked about Bra'tac taking out O'Neill with his forearm in Serpent's Lair. He and Cliff agree that the fans love seeing Jack get hurt. "It's the smugness." Tony talked about spending 2 1/2 hours in a glider with RDA during filming. They sang show tunes. *g* He and Don Davis would often eat lunch together, because they were 'the old guys'. One of them said that B&B brandy was named after Bra'tac and Ba'al. Tony and Chris Judge used to make up verses to "Row, row, row your boat" such as:
Row, row, row your boat
Gently down the stream
Eat the little symbiotes
Listen to them scream
Okaaaay, then.
They were asked what other SG-1 role they would've liked to play. Tony said "Hathor! You just get to sit around in a bathtub all day!" But he wouldn't have played Ska'ara, because he didn't think he could pull off the whole dreadlocks thing. *g* They were asked what they would like to do if they weren't actors, and Cliff said he'd like to run a charter boat outfit. I resisted shouting, "Swanboats!!!" :-D
11:35 Kate Hewlett. So. Much. Fun! She talked about when she first appeared on Atlantis, and David was so sweet, always making sure she was comfortable and had everything she needed. But of course that didn't last, and he'd be making beeping noises like a truck backing up when Kate stepped backwards. I have a big brother, too. *g* She was asked if Jeannie would ever have left her family behind and moved to Atlantis. She said, "Yes, and then she'd shack up with Momoa!"
She'd brought a photo of Rodney with her, and each person who went to the microphone during the Q&A got to tell her how they wanted the photo to be defaced. Some of the stuff that ended up drawn on the photo: girl hair, Hitler mustache, devil horns, eyepatch, a bra. Kate: "This is my best day ever!"
12:45 Steve Bacic. I wasn't there. I was having TMI tummy troubles. I spent the next 2 1/2 hours in my room, also missing the 2:15 auction. But after napping and showering, I was more or less prepared to face the world again.
3:10 Jewel Staite. I took no notes. Fans asked questions about everything she's ever been in, I think. Canadian shows from when she was barely in her teens. The X-Files and receiving mouth-to-mouth resuscitation from David Duchovny while soaking wet. She mentioned going online and discovering all the hatred of Dr. Keller that she found. I don't believe she talked much about The L.A. Complex, but many of the fans prefaced their questions with how much they liked it, and she was very happy to hear that. That show gets my seal of approval, by the way.
3:55 The Stargate Yes/No Game, aka Sid gets up on stage. Yes, I did, for the third round I think it was, when they were running out of volunteers. They give you a 'yes' card and a 'no' card, and you have to quickly raise the correct one when they ask a yes/no trivia question. I sat down on a SGU question, about Dale Volker's science speciality. Because this con was for all three shows, and the questions reflected that. No matter that there wasn't a single SGU actor there...
5:00 Torri Higginson. She had a long scarf draped around her neck, and at some point, in response to a question which I can't recall, hesitated a bit and then told us that she'd been unexpectedly ill earlier this year, and she has scars on her throat. Right now she thinks the only role she could play would be a pirate. So I have no idea what that was about, but I hope she's okay.
6:00 break. This would have been the time to go eat, but I had no confidence in my stomach. I can't remember what I did, but I think I just stayed in the lobby with my netbook.
7:00 Autographs with Torri (for Gold members and people who purchased her ticket), Jewel, Joe Flanigan, Cliff, Tony (and Paul McGillion, originally, but he had flight issues and got rescheduled to the following day.) They call us up by rows, which means all the Gold ticket holders go first. I'm in Row P. It's going to be a long night. Eventually I head for the bar to kill time there. I have one beer, which seems to agree with my stomach. Yay! Back to the theatre. If I'd come back ten minutes later I would have been terribly confused, because they've asked all of us in the back rows to move forward into the seats that have been vacated by Gold members who are in line or already have gotten their autographs and left. They need to start setting up the back half of the room for the Gold Members Dessert Party scheduled for 10:45.
The rules and FAQ about autographs say "If you have trouble standing, let us know." I'd already let them know earlier, and they told me that when my row was called they would shuttle me to the head of the existing line. This turned out to be a moot point, since I had moved up to sit in Row B, and when Row P got called, Torri suddenly decided that she was done for the night. She'd signed for all the Gold members at that point, but there were still at least a couple dozen ticket holders, some of whom hadn't even been called into line yet. Joe had already taken off earlier, but he had two sessions scheduled for Sunday morning. Torri didn't. So everyone started scrambling frantically to get her remaining ticket holders lined up, and Torri back in her chair, because she'd already stood up and pushed it under the table. "Everybody with a ticket for Torri line up over here!" Everybody took two steps to the left...and I was suddenly first in line for Jewel Staite, and standing right next to the Creation employee who I'd talked to earlier about being moved to the head of the line. Wild.
I walked up to Jewel and told her I loved her food blog. She asked me if I remembered the lasagna-off, and introduced me to the friend sitting with her by his nickname, The Aristocrat, and I made a big surprised face that she thought was hilarious. (I set up a DW feed if anyone's interested in the blog. She's hilarious, and all the food and wine talk is mouth-watering.
jewelstaitefoodblog_feed. I'm the only subscriber! Join me!)
So I have Jewel, Joe left, Paul never arrived. Off to the other side of the theatre for Tony and Cliff's autographs next. The line over there is long, so I hover in no-man's-land until a Creation employee spots me. She shuttles me to the head of the line. Yay! I'm okay walking, but any length of time spent standing still grows painful very quickly. Soon I'm getting Tony's autograph. Jewel gave me a ♥, and Tony wishes me Good Luck.
Cliff is signing at the next table. Just as I get up to him, he pauses to order a cup of coffee. Regular sugar and a little Cremora, or whatever equivalent they have on hand. I DECLARE THIS TO BE CANON!BA'AL COFFEE. (Hee! Cannonball!) Cliff gives me Love, and I thank him and start to step away, but then I remembered he'd told the person ahead of me that he was flying out in the morning, so I wished him a safe flight.
That's it for the night, so I head back to the bar. After a beer I decide that my stomach has been behaving itself perfectly, and it's safe to eat. So yeah, at about 11 pm I finally have my supper! I'm chatting with the man on my right (who turns out to be the man on my left at the other end of Row P!), and a woman on my left who promises to report to me the next day on whether or not the Dessert Party and the Sunday Morning Breakfast make the Gold ticket worthwhile. (She said they did not. A bowl of ice cream and a Continental breakfast, plus two minutes with some celebrities.)
Stay tuned for the Sunday report, a couple of YouTube links, and photos!

Dessert parties and breakfasts USED to be worth it for the food alone, but over the past few years are most definitely NOT....penny pinching and value for money don't go hand in hand with Creation...
Jewel is a hoot....I had a blast meeting her this year in London and I ADORE her blog too!...sorry to hear Torri was ill...hope she isn't too scarred..she's a true lady and free spirit..I love her!!..
Thank you so much hon, wish I could have shared a stool at the bar with ya!!...one day maybe..:)

I'm one of the people who didn't like Keller very much, but Jewel is a jewel. :-)
I'd be most happy to raise a glass with you one day!

ETA: and I didn't miss any autographs, just Steve Bacic on stage and the auction (where I wouldn't have been bidding anyway.)

I attended two Highlander conventions with a friend, in 2000 and 2001, I think. This experience didn't really resemble those much, but prior experience gave me the courage to set sail alone, knowing that anyone I came into contact with would be friendly. And possibly freaky, but that's okay. ;-)

Agree with Deeds.. Gold TIckets only worth for the better pictures & least waiting for auto. Dessert/Breakfast are not worth it anymore.
Creation's been playing with the lighting lately, so after row D. your pictures are bad unless you have DSLR camera... Cretins!! :(
I won $750 (won 3 rounds) of Creation merch on the YES/NO game.. would've won the $1500 (4 rounds winner) but I hesitate on 1 question.. I got it right, but I hesitated like 2 seconds. :( It's the best kind of revenge I got for the money that Creation took from me all these years.. LOL!

From Row P, with a camera-phone, it was hopeless. My zoom would not get me anywhere near a good photo, and the lighting didn't help. Personally, I had a tiny pair of binoculars, so I could see the stage just fine. *g*
Ooh, you are a yes/no MASTER! Even for SG-1 and Atlantis I thought the questions were pretty hard, when they claimed to still be on the easy questions!

She started out by having us all play a game, where we all stood up, then sat down if something she said was not true for us. Do you have a brother, did you fly here, did you drink too much coffee on the plane? The last person standing received the defaced photograph of David. *G*

hotel pillows are too many & over stuffed. IMHO.

I did like that they had one long thin pillow that worked very well for putting between my knees. Kudos for that!

But I have thousands of photos including stuff like this...*snerk*....although this one was taken in Chicago at the now-defunct Wyndham O'Hare...*snerk*...I think Gin & Tonic or Margheritas were heavily involved...:P

I just posted my dragon con experience on my journal. Torri was there! She actually came to the Saturday night Stargate party (she wanted to take pictures on the green screen they had set up for fans) We ran into her in the bathroom and she said hi to me ! But ur right, she was wearing a long heavy scarf. Makes me curious what went on with her.
Looking forward to the pictures!!!

The pics will just be scans of the autographs, since my camera-phone was utterly inadequate from Row P. *sad face*

Sorry, I thought this was in the auto queues alone....I only ever remember them allowing photos in one year, 2006, after that it was no photography at all during autos and photo ops...
