As his memories slowly began to resurface, as Jack became a familiar part of his life again, the references to 'Jim' stopped. And the question of 'Why Jim?' was pushed away to a corner of Daniel's mind. Where it remained, held in place by the rising tide of memories that flooded in at an increasing rate daily.
Then one night Daniel woke abruptly from a dream, and he knew who Jim was. A boy from his undergraduate days; more than an acquaintance and something less than a friend. An object of lust, and the feeling had been mutual.
He blinked into the darkness, smiling slightly at the memory of hasty hand jobs in out-of-the-way corners of the campus. He remembered spitting out his first mouthful of semen, and wondering how people did this. He remembered how good it felt when Jim took him into his mouth, and how grownup it made him feel.
Not hard to figure out from there why he had persisted in calling Jack, 'Jim'. He'd have to remember to tell Jack in the morning.
He burrowed deeper into the pillow, and the arm around him tightened briefly. Daniel was smiling as he drifted back to sleep.

whenever i read a fic mentioning 'jim' i wonder if it's going to be about daniel's boyhood crush on captain kirk-shh don't tell

However, Jack is still probably pissed at him for getting his name wrong. So, this way, Daniel can establish that even before he knew who the hell Jack was, subconsciously he wanted to have sex with him. ;-)

I always thought that maybe the writers had Daniel call Jack 'Jim' as a reference to Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, where Spock sees Kirk, remembered who he was and called him Jim. Just a thought.

(Somewhat ironically, I was watching Threads prior to logging on to lj, and Anubis tells Daniel to call him "Jim." Later, Anubis calls Daniel "Danny boy." It really makes me wonder what kind of mind games Anubis was playing with Daniel before Daniel figured out who "Jim" really was).
