'On Call', gen drabble

This strange little thing just came out of the blue last night, when I was musing about prompts:

ON CALL

Jack stayed at Daniel’s bedside into the wee hours, seeking encouragement from the steady heart rhythm on the monitor. But Daniel’s face was a mass of bruises on shockingly pale skin, and there was universal concern that he hadn’t woken yet. So Jack sat and worried.

A hand touched his shoulder, and Jack knew he’d fallen asleep. Janet was peering at the monitors. Her hand smoothed over Daniel’s sheets. She turned, smiling. “He’s going to be fine, Colonel.”

“It’s General, now, actually.”

Jack opened his eyes, feeling refreshed and filled with renewed hope. His faith in Janet had never died.
