Yes, the violence was clear enough, it was the sexual aspect of it that remained hidden from view. Well, not from my view, but I didn't want to make everybody else have to look at it.
The floor motif just came to me out of nowhere when I was writing the rape scene, and it worked out very well as a connecting thread running throughout the story. Daniel almost didn't have that conversation with Sam, because it took both of us a while to realize that if it hadn't been him, it would have been someone else. And she would have been a natural target.
Apparently Daniel has taught Jack very well about respecting his boundaries. I imagine the discussions occasionally became quite heated!
