Oh, that last one was wonderful balm after you broke my heart over and over! Somehow the saddest--even more than the duel ones!--was the very first, and the way a fleeting illusory bird prevents even the very beginning.
When Jack realized that he was smiling at the stranger, not being Stephen, he allowed himself to smile more broadly.
I loved all of that last one so much--so full of character moments, and I especially loved the adorable parenthetical comments that smashed POB's diction in every direction with gleeful joy. Lovely!
