In your own space, share a book/song/movie/tv show/fanwork/etc that changed your life. Something that impacted on your consciousness in a way that left its mark on your soul.
I have to start with The Man from U.N.C.L.E.. The first time I saw it was in a motel room, on a family summer vacation. During the school year, I would have been in bed when it aired, but in the summer I got to stay up later. MFU taught me that there was something worth staying up for! It really was my introduction to "adult" television. I got fannish. My allowance went for the paperback novels. I still have them fifty years later. I (and many other kids) wrote fanfic (although that word didn't exist) for school assignments, until the teacher put his foot down and told us to cut it out. LOL.
As an interesting aside, that first episode I saw guest starred 13-year-old Kurt Russell. :-)
The next show that changed my life was Wiseguy, because of the places it led me. Many of you have heard this story before. I didn't watch Wiseguy when it initially aired, but read good things about it in TV Guide, so when it went into syndication I started watching it. That was probably in 1994 or 5. I can pinpoint it fairly well, because it was frequently preempted by the O.J. Simpson murder trial coverage. I loved it, got into the whole story arc thing, loved Sonny Steelgrave and Vinnie Terranova's relationship, and Vinnie and Roger's, Vinnie and Frank's, Vinnie and Uncle Mike's...
"Uncle Mike" was played by Jim Byrnes, whose face I saw late one night whle flipping channels looking for something to watch. What I ended up watching was Highlander, just looking for the bits with Jim. Naturally I got engrossed with the lead characters and the stories and the costumes...and Methos, aka Death, aka Peter Wingfield. I went with a friend to a couple of conventions, and at one Peter answered a question about his guest role on some series I'd never even heard of. Two of my friends tried to explain it to me later, but it all just sounded like gibberish.
But a short while later, my cable company offered a discounted upgrade, and I suddenly had Showtime, and I could check out this odd show. Just looking for the bits with Peter, of course. Who, as it turned out, wasn't in all that many episodes.
But of course I got engrossed with the lead characters and the stories. Plus, at one of the Highlander conventions, someone had introduced me to the concept of fanfiction. "Be careful what you click on, though. Some of it's slash!" I nearly fainted from excitement when she explained what slash was. I wasn't alone! People were actually writing m/m romance and smut and putting it where other people could read it! At the first opportunity, I'd gone looking for Wiseguy and Highlander slash. And there was X-Files and U.N.C.L.E., and Alias Smith and Jones, and Wild, Wild West, and basically every single show and pair of leading men I'd ever adored.
And now there was Jack/Daniel.
Home. :-)
