The formality is interesting, because I think part of it stems from Daniel's new status as a widower. And I'm not saying that with slash goggles in place, although that would add even another layer! Just, Daniel's not quite himself, more withdrawn, and Jack's doing the eggshell-walk. He knows loss and guilt and pain only too well, and I can't imagine he reacted well to sympathy at the time.
