Looking back, Jack seemed to spend most of his time trying to distract Daniel from pursuing the truth. Maybe he was afraid that those hadn't been Daniel's real feelings after all, and he just wanted to postpone the evil hour when he'd find out that he was right.
I wonder if he sounded a little bitter when he said, "If you really loved me..."
