I have to say it never even occurred to me that our Daniel might volunteer to go! He does have a bit of the martyr about him, though, and he loves Jack...
That would make a wonderful story, too, with Jack realizing he could never let him go. Because, like you said, people aren't interchangeable. He'd be losing something real for the sake of something illusory. I think his gut instinct would have him shouting "No!" before Daniel could even get all the words out. :-)
So many (infinite) possibilities with alternate universes - that story must have played out somewhere. Ooh, what a shivery thought that somewhere a Daniel volunteered and a Jack let him go. *shudders in the good way*
