HOLD FAST TO DREAMS

 

Half asleep and more, Daniel leans against the wall, eyes closed as he pisses into the toilet, vaguely hoping that he’s not dreaming, not soaking the sheets in reality. He doesn’t flush; he might wake himself up.

 

Should have turned off the computer and gone to bed three hours ago.

 

He opens his eyes enough to find his way to the bed. Climbs in, pulling the covers up. He sinks into the pillow and into sleep.

 

Warm weight presses against his back, a voice murmurs, "'bout time,” and Daniel knows he’s still not dreaming.

 

Or the voice would be Jack’s.

Author's Notes: As I wrote this I became convinced that it's a companion piece to 'In These Dreams'.  In other words, the man in the bed is Bjorn.  And I think this drabble could fit in either before or after 'In These Dreams' (but not as an immediate tag.)

The insight I've gained into Daniel's POV here, along with what we already knew or suspected, tells me the following:

1. Daniel is in love with Jack.  (We knew that, we just weren't sure he knew.)

2. He's always been aware of Jack's feelings for him.  (He's not a bit surprised when Jack makes his declaration.)

3. He honestly believes they'd be hopeless together. (Daniel looked at him with a mournful face and eyes that invited him to see reason.)
 
4. He's made his peace with the fact that some dreams can't come true. (He's calm and cheerful as he invites Jack to interrogate him about Bjorn.)

And I'm extrapolating that another reason he would avoid a relationship with Jack would be because of the risk to Jack's career.  Also, as I keep telling you, Bjorn is a Nice Guy.  And Daniel has Actual Feelings for him.  Bjorn's not just there so that Daniel can tell Jack, "I'm seeing someone," and avoid a more awkward conversation.  (Although he was relieved that he had that answer ready, just in case Jack ever acted on his feelings.  Daniel's pretty far-sighted, myopia aside.)

There will be more to come at some point in this Dreamverse.  Of the Jack meets Bjorn variety.  :-)

Okay... I'm thinking "Poor DANIEL" as well as "Poor Jack"

And as I said - Mr Right Now is FINE until - and as long as - Daniel eventually ends up with his sarcastic,sardonic, snarky, smug... and sexy Mr Right. (JACK if you hadn't guessed ;) )

I *like* Sleepy!Daniel and this - even if drabbles annoy me because I always want MORE, dammit - but as tejas said... SAD. :( Realistic, because many of us DO try to let our heads rule our hearts when it comes to love & romance, especialy if we fear hurting someone dear or GETTING hurt and I can totally buy that Daniel WOULD -- but love is SUPPOSED to be madly, delightfully illogical, isn't it?

But... PLEASE? Our Guys? Together? Hot sex or warm snuggles or both? Cheerful? Even, dare I say it, fuzzy? Soon?

Yeah, Daniel's not following his heart, and Jack can see the logic, at least a little bit (and has no idea what's in Daniel's heart, so has no reason to put up a fight.)

The next step is for Jack and Bjorn to meet... and talk. *eg*

Just to mess with the "I hate Bjorn" contingent (who seem to believe that Daniel is thick enough to date a right PILLOCK?) I'd like to see them GET ON. ;)

You know, Bjorn be Good People and of the Race That Know Joseph. ;) And Daniel to be obviously happy(ish) and Bjorn intent on making him more so. And Jack to feel even more...

And I'll be shutting up now. :D Am I evil? I'd like to be evil.

Edit: Does this come across as me being bitchy to other readers? Not my intention, but I've just re-read what I said and now I'm worried. :/ Maybe I should avoid being online at 7am.

I've been thinking about this on and off all day - work was V V boring - and I got to this...

When I dated my best friend, it really screwed things up, because loving someone & fancy-ing the pants off them doesn't necessarily make for a good relationship. Then when the romance ended, while the friendship lasted for a while, his next girlfriend asked him to sever all ties with me because I was his "ex" *sigh* He DID.

With Jack and Daniel, not only are they best friends, but they also have to WORK together. I can TOTALLY see why Daniel would not want to risk the relationship even while he DREAMS about it.

That's what they call "internal conflict" :D

Jack asks, Daniel says "Yes" and they are then together forever would be a boring story, even with hot sex scenes in it. :D

I'm liking this set up more and more.
