I helped my nephew move to Ohio today. His father was working, all of his buddies had other plans (it was really short notice, so that part's probably true. *g*) So my SIL and I were it.
Idiot did most of his packing today. We were supposed to leave at noon. Then it was two. It was nearly three pm by the time we hit the road. Oh! And the night before, I pointed out that we could put things in my car if there wasn't room for everything in the truck. "I don't have that much stuff," he sez, dismissively.
Yeah. My car was stuffed full.
His mom and I just got home around 11 pm. *cries* I am going to hurt so bad tomorrow, and Monday will probably be worse. :-(
I did very little of the loading and unloading of the U-Haul truck. My bad knee goes out even when I'm not hauling boxes and things around. I really only helped with the treadmill, which was hard enough with the three of us. They actually thought they could do it by themselves. *rolls eyes*
When we got to his new home in Celina, Ohio, I mostly unpacked boxes while they did the unloading.
So: Ohio. I've heard of drive-through liquor stores; hadn't ever seen them in the flesh before. Wacky.
But nephew, doing some shopping at WalMart, thought he could pick himself up some Jim Beam there. Only to discover that they only sold diluted liquor. This... this... words fail me.
What's up with that? *looks at Mabi*
(and the reason I devoted myself to unpacking boxes was so that I could bring them back home, since I will be needing them myself, when I move to Wisconsin to take care of Dad by the end of September if not sooner. Oy. *flails*)

Date: Aug. 3rd, 2009 11:46 pm (UTC)Not too bad. My knee is still much worse than usual on the stairs, but my back is okay and my feet seem to have recovered.
Had the report from nephew tonight regarding his first day on the new job, and things seem to have gone really well!

Date: Aug. 2nd, 2009 04:43 am (UTC)Yes, I've seen drive-thru liquor stores. A couple in the southern part of the state and the northeast. Actually, I haven't been all over the state so I can't speak for all areas. I have always thought it a strange concept, what with all the concern about drinking-and-driving. They're actually hard to find in Hamilton county, but... Well, it's easier to just say that Ohio seems to really like Blue Laws but each county cherry picks what variation of Blue Laws they want to follow. So you can find drive-thrus in some areas, and other areas might only sell diluted items. Some places won't sell anything on Sundays, while other places will allow beer and wine, but only after 1pm.
And restrictions on porn are quite variable: banned in Hamilton county where I grew up, so it was kind of a shock when I took a job in a bookstore in Cuyahoga county and suddenly had Penthouse, Playboy and Playgirl to stock the shelves.

Date: Aug. 2nd, 2009 05:05 pm (UTC)It's a damned silly episode, but it has its compensations. Though I'm not sure how much he's actually enjoying it; he's facing impending doom unless he gets loose. One of those scenes.
There's another seventh season Mac ep where he gets chained up with duct tape over his mouth. Haven't capped that one yet . . .

Will nephew now be obligated to help you move? There's gotta be an upside!

Date: Aug. 2nd, 2009 06:36 pm (UTC)It... troubles me. Because once you add ice, it'd get diluted even more. And that's just Not Right!
I wasn't in the store, so I didn't see the actual crime being committed. I believe the number "21" was mentioned to me. ABV maybe? Which would be 42 proof.
I can't actually find any details online. Google is failing me!
I'm going to hire a moving company and spare everyone's feet, legs and backs (except the studly young moving professionals. *g*) Nephew is only obligated to pay back the 200 bucks I loaned him, lol.

Date: Aug. 2nd, 2009 06:42 pm (UTC)I stayed in the car, so I didn't see the diluted bottles in WalMart. I don't know if the liquor stores also sell the diluted stuff. I... can't comprehend why anyone would want it!
More wackiness: you have to buy your trash bags at a Shell station (or a couple of other outlets). They have the name of the city on them and they're the way you pay for trash pickup.
*wonders how many empty bottles of diluted liquor fit inside them*
Ohio is like an alien planet! *g*

Date: Aug. 2nd, 2009 08:21 pm (UTC)If they do, it's probably drive-thru:
THROW CANS AT THIS CONTAINER
THROW PLASTICS AT THIS CONTAINER
THROW BOTTLES AT THIS CONTAINER (but only if they're empty of diluted liquor, plzkthx)

Date: Aug. 3rd, 2009 12:35 am (UTC)One thing I was surprised to find in L.A. was alcohol being served in Denny's restaurants!
(and it rained the entire time I was there, so no sunburn for me. And no chance to use the hotel pool. *pouts*)

Date: Aug. 11th, 2009 02:26 pm (UTC)I've been packing my dishes either with actual packing paper (left over from my last move) or I've slipped them inside plastic grocery bags before wrapping in newspaper. But the t-shirt idea is a really good one - I've got a drawerful that I hardly ever wear! I'll definitely keep that in mind, since there's still a lot to be packed.
I've started a list of things that will go with me in my car. Things the moving company won't take, things like family photos that they recommend you take yourself (since insurance certainly can't replace them), things that I absolutely have to have before my things get delivered. There's even a possibility that my things will go into storage for a month or two, so my list is pretty long!
I'll take your advice and put everything that I'll need the first night and morning into one specific bag or suitcase. That'll cut down on the stress!
I had a bladder infection during a move once. I was absolutely exhausted, but I couldn't sit still. I'd collapse into a chair and be up two minutes later, unpacking a box or hanging a picture. There was just so much to do! :-)
