Looking for a beta (plus random stuff)

5,375 words on my Cam!trope fic. w00t! That adds another 1500 or so to what I added day before yesterday. And then I realized that I haven't lined up anyone to beta read it for me when it's completed.
The majority is done. Maybe another thousand words max? And it won't be due until Nov. 2nd. You can read all about the premise of the ficathon at
cm_tropefic or
cm_tropefic.
I selected Quantum Mirror as my trope. It's going to be R rated, and if you're at all interested in beta-ing, I can let you have more details before you commit. :-)

I've been getting spam email from my own dreamwidth email account, with subject lines like: where have you been? when will we meet again?
I decided after 3 or 4 of those that they were creepy enough to do something about, so I blocked receipt. A little while ago I got one of those emails that you get when an email you sent doesn't go through? Except it was showing me the email that was blocked from reaching me. I may have blocked receipt too soon, sounds like things were about to get interesting - the subject line of this one was: have a concrete thing in pants!
Well, hopefully this will discourage the sender for good. *shrugs*

I'm up at Dad's this week. We went to the Great Lakes Brew Fest on Saturday and had a wonderful time. He had such a good time that he fell trying to get into the car when it was time to go home. ;-) He didn't get hurt, though, and there were half a dozen people there instantly to help him up. We got lucky when we arrived, because the parking lot was roped off as being full, but an attendant saw Dad holding his Handicapped Parking thingie and went to see if there were any of those spots left. Wound up smack dab in front of the building we wanted.
Tonight there was a Fall Festival right across the street (we're half a block off a business district). Bought some stuff at the Farmer's Market (mostly things I won't eat, lol, although I did buy some garlic and sugar snap peas), sampled a few beers and carried some hot dogs back home with us for supper. Ooh, a link! I met the lady in pink who painted the little pumpkins. We talked about celery root, (right behind the painted pumpkins) but I couldn't bring myself to buy any. Be fun to try some one day, though. She said it's much more common in Europe than it is here.

Back to writing? Or I might see if I can stream Castle online....

Date: Sep. 24th, 2009 04:23 am (UTC)I've gotten emails in the past from my main email account, too. I have no idea how the spammers do it. It's harmless enough, as long as you don't open them or click on any links, I guess. These were just a little on the creepy side, you know?
I haven't written an original SG-1 amnesia!fic, yet! It's on my to-do list. :-) Go you!

Date: Sep. 24th, 2009 10:23 am (UTC)Plus, betaing has the added bonus of taking me away from the ficathon story I haven't started yet. Heh.

Date: Sep. 24th, 2009 02:09 pm (UTC)Definitely need to get back to my J/D story. I still haven't quite determined where it's going. That... would probably be a good thing to know, lol.

Date: Sep. 24th, 2009 10:28 pm (UTC)Yes, the Brew Fest is lots of fun. Just a great atmosphere of beer geeks being friendly and having a good time. And the beer is yummy, too. :-) (not that I sampled all 200+ kinds, but in general, lol.)

Date: Oct. 2nd, 2009 11:19 am (UTC)I am good with spelling and grammar - with the grammar part, I know what is technically correct, but I also know when breaking the rules can be effective and better, too. Basically if you want feedback on just misspellings and blatant grammatical errors I can do that, or could give more feedback if you wanted it on stuff like "does this part here flow and make sense".
I am not necessarily good with continuity issues - especially with Cam, there are episodes I haven't seen - and certain factual stuff I can point out if I know it's wrong but if I don't know then I obviously wouldn't know to say anything.
I used to be a copy editor but I have never betaed fanfic, so I guess it would all depend on what you want. (Maybe everybody looks for the same thing in a beta and I just don't know! I am clueless! But yours if you want me :-D )

Date: Oct. 3rd, 2009 08:44 pm (UTC)I don't think there's anything in this story that would require much knowledge of the continuity of Cam's tenure on the show.
My most basic 'need' from a beta is for naughty typos and grammar errors to be spotted, and a step up from that would be advice on word choice when something pings as not-quite-right or something that could be improved upon.
Then would come things like you mentioned: flow and making sense, pacing, characterization. Plot holes(on the rare occasions that I HAVE a plot, lol). Basically I'll take a serious look at any advice I'm given and then do what seems right. :-)
Thank you for offering! I'm saving the email notification in my 'Writing' folder for future reference. Have to work on my J/D ficathon story before I can get back to finishing this Cam story up. *flails*
