Today I reclaimed my bedroom closet! That is to say, the closet that was mine when I lived here growing up, and which has been inaccessible for the five months I've been back. It's a long walk-in, but built under the eaves of the house so that on one side the wall slopes inwards starting a couple of feet from the floor.

The hooks and racks on the other side were completely filled with old clothing of my father's. The floor at the back and along the sides was filled with old suitcases and hatboxes and briefcases, a chair, a box filled with Mom's old purses (yes, she never threw anything away, either), a bag filled with old drycleaning bags, some pieces of wood and two paint cans. The rest of the floor was covered with my stuff - things that I brought here personally rather than having the moving van take them. Mostly lightweight things in plastic bags, that I saw no sense in boxing up and paying to have moved (baskets, Christmas things), some boxes of irreplaceable-if-not-valuable stuff, an extra laundry basket, my suitcases.

So, completely unusable, in other words. My clothes have been hanging on racks over the back of the bedroom and closet doors, on a tripod-based two-arm rack that liked to tip over every time I took something off of it, and down the hall in the closet outside the bathroom.

No more! I started pulling things from the floor into the bedroom, and started moving things that weren't mine into Dad's closet and stacking my things on the bed and the floor. Then I started taking hangers full of clothing in and tossing it all on Dad's bed (and later on the chair that I moved from my closet - the stack on the bed was getting pretty high!)

Okay, first half done. Long rest with cold beverage called for. Then same deal with the back half of the closet. Another rest. Attack of the vacuum cleaner! Begone, cobwebs! Then a can of Pledge and a couple of dustcloths for the baseboards, the clothes racks. Another much needed rest period. The vacuum obviously hadn't gotten up all the dust from the floor, so time to drag out the mop and pail.

Another rest and some supper, which I have a funny feeling is the first food I actually ate today(!), and then it was time to start moving my clothes in. When that was done, I started sorting through all my bags and boxes, grouping all the Christmas stuff together and moving it to the back of the closet. And while I was back there I suddenly remembered something. Those pieces of wood! There's meant to be a shelf back here! Oh, and wasn't that fun to put together, because the way the wall slants I had to have the boards lined up just perfectly or one end or the other would catch. But in the end I had a deep, narrow shelf to put crap on! \o/ (Narrow, because that high up, the walls are very close together.)

Anyway, I found a place along the closet walls for everything else, including the things I was storing under the bed and along the bedroom wall past the foot of the bed. Maybe tomorrow I'll get the things out from underneath the blanket chest and find a place for them, too! The excitement never ends. *g*

The room looks so much bigger! The tripod-thingy is gone, the stacks along the wall are gone, the rack over the closet door is gone (I put it over the bedroom door, since it's shorter than the one that was there, and now I can open the bedroom door farther. \o/)

The downside is that I still will have to deal at some point with everything that I dumped into Dad's room today (and I've been trying to get that room cleaned out!), but filling trash bags wasn't on the to-do list. I'm proud that I managed to stay focused and accomplish the goal du jour, because it's so easy to get distracted when there's SO MUCH that needs doing. *sighs*

I very nearly forgot: when I was going through all the plastic drycleaning bags, thinking that some of them would be useful, I realized that one wasn't just wadded up - it had something inside it. Something... purple. PIERRE!! Pierre the Purple Poodle! With... only one ear, and the other one in imminent danger, and his tail looking much the same way. My poor baby. So I told him I was glad to see him and that I would always love him, and I gently wrapped him back up and put him in the trash. *sniffles* But it really was nice to see him! :-)

p.s. I found his other ear a while later. *g*
