Hurray for the Farmers' Market! I have asparagus, strawberries, radishes, green onions and super-fresh eggs.
And hurray for it being right across the street, which is about the limit of the walking I can do right now. I fell on the basement stairs June 6th and I'm still hobbling if I exert myself very much. Notice I say 'on' the stairs instead of 'down' the stairs. I fell backward, not forward, and sat down hard. The back of my upper right thigh/lower butt is where it still hurts.
But this is a great improvement from the first few days, where I had my wrenched right knee tightly wrapped and was walking with a cane, and the stiffness from wrenching my back is long gone.
I'll be pretty much emptying out my pantry and freezer before I'm up for a grocery shopping expedition though!

Date: Jun. 17th, 2011 05:00 pm (UTC)Nevertheless, I am thrilled to hear that you have a farmers' market across the street. :D We have one wednesdays and saturdays and it is a pleasure to go shopping there. Everything is from our region and it is a pleasure to see asparagus and other fresh vegetables and, best of all, fresh strawberries. :D
Do you have white and/or green asparagus?

Date: Jun. 17th, 2011 05:42 pm (UTC)I wish I'd picked up some of the fresh garlic... now that I've looked it up online and know what to do with it! The market will be back next Wednesday and Friday.
I'm comfortable enough moving around the house and sitting down is fine. Hopefully the walking part will come back to me soon. :-)

Date: Jun. 17th, 2011 07:25 pm (UTC)I recently tried out spaghetti with spring onions and asparagus. Easy, and so very delicious. It doesn't matter if you use green or white asparagus, it simply looked good on the plate.
I will keep my fingers crossed that you will soon be comfortable moving again.

Date: Jun. 17th, 2011 07:45 pm (UTC)That is what I did: for the looks I sliced the asparagus thinly lengthwise finely chopped the spring onions and roasted in olive oil. After a while I added a tablespoon of cream and added everything to the pasta I'd done separately. I think some garlic would come in handy too and add a bit more spice
Oh, there is something to be said about summer cooking.

Date: Jun. 18th, 2011 07:26 am (UTC)You can also sprinkle sugar into the pan, then add pieces of asparagus, let them caramelize and dash in some white wine... :D
Or it makes for a lovely soup when you add first some broth to stew and then a small can of coconut milk to the sliced asparagus, spring onions and black pepper. Then add cooked pasta and have fresh baguette ready to serve with that.
You can tell, I live in an asparagus region? ;D

Date: Jun. 19th, 2011 06:01 am (UTC)Bleh!
Over here we mainly grow white asparagus which is best eaten very simply, with small new potatoes and melted butter (or a Hollandaise), maybe two or three thin slices of smoked ham. *beams*
Indeed, I like it very much,as did Mum, as do many people round here. Still, we only have it during its season. Several people put it in the freezer...well...
:D Have a wonderful meal.
