Edited again: see my next post - I have possibly uncovered a design flaw in the payment system!

Edited: LJ's billing department tells me I signed up for auto-pay two years ago (Feb. 2010). If I did, it was by accident! I do not remember receiving a notice in Feb. 2011 saying: we'll be billing your credit card. I only remember: your account's about to expire.

Very little of this makes sense to me, but it's a fact that I've been paying $19.95 for the last two years, which is the reduced rate you get for enrolling in auto-payments. I had no idea. I know I paid manually last Feb., but then I also was switching to a different credit card, so who knows. They say I switched cards and then they auto-billed me.

And this? The automatic payment enrollment process does indicate in several places it is a reoccurring payment, including a chart of "today's payment" and "regular payments" to indicate what you will be billed the day you enroll, versus the normal amount. Rings no bells whatsoever.

I would not even have checked my account status if I hadn't seen other people reporting that there was a problem -- maybe we're all senile? :-/




Check your LiveJournal account status, everyone. They're fucking around with automatic payments! I have never had automatic payments turned on, but I am now being told that my credit card will be automatically billed. For account renewal AND userpic package.

You might want to call your credit card company now and inform them that LJ does not have your authorization to charge the card.

It's not a problem, because I had to replace that card after it got hacked. Plus the account renewal isn't until February. PLUS, I'm going to turn the auto-payment off myself, after waiting a few days to see if they correct whatever they fucked up.

They're going to find themselves with many lawsuits on their hands if they don't get this one fixed PRONTO. If it was just a mistake, being that careless IS criminal!

It gets stranger: I just looked back at my billing history, and it says that my last two renewals were "automatic". No. They weren't. (I didn't look back any further than that)

I don't know what I had set up but I did get a notice about the auto payment in advance of the actual charge, so I could have declined. However, I didn't because that was before the whole commenting fiasco (like one week before!) Also did you notice they gave the paid users extensions after the commenting release? If they'd done it right after the DDoS attack, I would still be on it, and not have re-upped already.

So, I take it you would be happy to move the read to DW? ;-)

Honestly, the read's the only thing keeping me on LJ.

My lj doesn't expire until February (March now), so I wouldn't have expected to get any emails at this point. And the credit card is defunct, so I'm not concerned anyway!

Yes, I would be very happy if the read and p_d moved shop to DW. The only reason I've kept a paid account here was to be able to expand comment threads in those comms (the read especially!). I struggled along with a free account and a handful of icons, but finally I couldn't take another minute of having to open every thread on a new page!

I've been on autopayment, officially and with permission and all that, for several years. I get a nice clear email each year, with details, as a receipt. That's how the system works when it's not fucked up.

I got stubborn over the DDoS attacks, and I've spent a lot of time the last two days signal-posting fixes, but this is just plain dickery (and illegal). I just upped to a paid account at DW, and I'm struggling with the import (although I'm going to have to give up on that and get some sleep now, and try again tomorrow).

DW is giving 10% bonus points on purchases at present -- equivalent of 10% off on paid accounts . . .

Ack, the DW layouts are mostly insanely ugly. Maybe we can get a new crop of excited layout designers to help? Yuk.

Renew With Automatic Payments OR Make A Manual Payment choices are given.

Two separate places to click.

IT DOESN'T MATTER WHICH BUTTON YOU CLICK ON, YOU GET TAKEN TO THE AUTO-PAYMENT OPTION.

I select Manual, and the next screen that comes up is for auto-payment enrollment. You have to click on a different tab at the top of the box to get the One Time Payment option.

No wonder I had no idea I was enrolling in auto-payment! THAT WAS NOT THE CHOICE I SELECTED.

Thank you for your reply -- I agree that if you're being taken to the automatic payments plan tab when you've clicked the 'manual' button, that's definitely a design flaw. You should be taken to the 'one time' tab in that case.

What page are you on when you see the initial options you listed: Renew With Automatic Payments OR Make A Manual Payment

If you can provide the direct URL/link where you're seeing those as options, then I can investigate further and get the proper people notified of this behavior. Thank you.
