I put my guest on the train a couple of hours ago, so I'm back to solo spectating. But we had a great time. We bonded over our mutual love of tennis, figure skating and gymnastics when we met, so we were pretty much in heaven. And he used to be a gymnast, so I got to listen to an expert dish, trash, praise and revile the athletes and routines. *eg*
LOLOLOL!!...another "fan" of NBC then?...NOT!!....sadly I had experience of the US way of covering Olympics during my month's stay in Vancouver during Beijing 2008...when Becky Adlington our swimmer was so miles ahead to win the Olympic Gold 800 metres medal they didn't even bother to finish broadcasting the live race because one of their own US athletes wasn't in contention!!!....bet they fucking did last night when the roles were reversed!!...
I thought it was disgraceful to cut a live swim off like that just because your country wasn't involved....I wouldn't watch NBC if you paid me whenever I visit the US now...:(
Quite how those teeny tiny little briefs don't end up round their ankles at the speed the divers hit the water escapes me ...but nevertheless I live in hope of an equipment fail!
(As well as admiring the divers bravery & technical ability, of course!)
So that's why it was so quiet around here! Who'd have guessed so many geeks would love to watch people getting sweaty...oh wait, we do like that. Never mind. ;o)
Did you see the tennis? It's been so much fun :-) :-) Also v popular with the girls: tutting about the beach volleyball bikinis and then watching every match just to disapprove further. Oh, and the UK women rowers - not so much the rowing as the hugging every time they won :-)
Shorts lengths go up and down. We must be due a teeny-tiny-shorts year soon! (I think the men should go back to playing in trousers, myself *g*)
Bother, I missed all the doubles tennis. Without satellite/cable, the BBC only have three channels for the Olympics, which isn't nearly enough to show all the different sports they're trying to cover. ALthough, bless them, they do keep showing the girls hugging. Over and over.
Depends on your setup, though, doesn't it? - my Red Button only gives BBC3 and channel 301.
I don't think it's just the cameramen ;-) Anyway we had a pubful of fifty or so dykes watching this weekend and the BBC's efforts were much appreciated.
my Red Button only gives BBC3 and channel 301 Bummer. :-(
Glad you feel the licence fee has been worth money though! ;-D
Personally I'm just happy the possibly apocryphal 'ban' on showing male athletes in their leave-nothing-to-the-imagination lycra either only from the waist up, or far distant long shot, now appears to be lifted.
I do think there should be a ban on commentators saying "they really rose to the occasion" over close-up shots of obviously happy lycra-clad medal-clutchers. It was funny the first time...

Date: Aug. 5th, 2012 10:27 pm (UTC)My friend and I spent a good proportion of our time bemoaning the modern length of tennis "shorts", and admiring the divers' more appropriate Speedos. And we had to rewind twice when Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and his doubles partner rolled around on the grass to celebrate their victory. *G* http://www.sport365.fr/medias/sporever/Sporever_940x460/Tennis/Francais/167627_TSONGA_LLODRA_JOIE_030812.jpg
