SIGNAL BOOST - Update Java now!
Sep. 2nd, 2012 01:29 amIf you have Java enabled on your computer, you need to update to the newest version, 7.7, which was released August 30th. The version right before that leaves you vulnerable in nasty ways, and older versions still leave you more vulnerable than the newest update.
I'll let Beth (
lolmac) explain it better, so go here for more details, instructions, and links to news articles.

Date: Sep. 2nd, 2012 07:01 pm (UTC)(You're vulnerable to other exploits. But not this one. Also don't get me started on not providing security fixes to older OSes when 10.5 was the last version to run on the PowerPC chipset and many people can't upgrade past 10.5 without buying a whole new computer. Part of the reason to buy Mac for a bunch of people used to be that the damn things would last forever; you used to be able to easily go 7-10 years before having to upgrade your hardware because shit didn't work anymore. Not that I ever did, but my parents did and it at least saved me from having to listen to them gripe about Things Being Different. And Expensive. Honey, Why Do I Need To Do This Anyway, The Old One Worked Fine. *sulk*)
Slightly Peeved Ocelot
Date: Sep. 2nd, 2012 10:36 pm (UTC)There is a 7.7 for Mac, but not a 6.35 (which patches the older holes but isn't vulnerable to the v.7 holes). Gah.

Date: Sep. 2nd, 2012 10:43 pm (UTC)Slightly Peeved Ocelot = Lion
Mad Wet Bobcat = Mountain Lion
Haven't quite settled on one for "version after this one" yet. We've tried on a few for size, but right now the one that seems to be winning is Moderately Irked Lynx.
