Property of [Bad username or unknown identity: delphia2000 Old Farts Movie List (110 Great Films) Mark which of these you've seen and write down the ones you haven't so you can go rent them because if you haven't seen them, you aren't a movie buff by any means…you're just a kid who went to the movies a lot. :o) Sure, there are plenty more films I (delph) could have listed here, but I've tried to choose some that are unknown gems or vastly overlooked, especially older films that I grew up seeing but are not so easily found anymore. Some I just couldn't not list even tho I'm sure most people have seen them. Some could be listed in more than one category, but I put them where I thought they fit best. If there are multiple versions of a movie, in most cases, I mean the original, not the remakes. If you're a color snob, I suggest you educate yourself to the beauty of black and white. It looks like I don't watch many Westerns, but that's not so.  Just different ones.  I'd have "Shane" on my list, and  "Rancho Notorious" and "Destry Rides Again". ]

Seriously Sid...you haven't seen The Quiet Man? :o) Pretty good number of them tho. I'm impressed with your 24 carat taste! I tried not to pick too many of the obvious ones, but also tried not to miss the classic must-see's. Hard to limit it to so few! I did consider Shane for a long time, but didn't put it there because it is fairly well known.

And I do have a separate list of my favorite Christmas movies that includes Wonderful Life, but again, a more popular choice that many have seen.

OH, yeah, The Quiet Man. The movie that proved John Wayne could actually act. Or at least carry a Really Good Film. ;-)

There's no Abbott&Costello. Someone already mentioned the lack of Marx Brothers. Where're the Hope & Crosby Road Movies? I used to love it when one of the local stations played marathons of those. :-)

Also, missing, as noted previously, It's a Wonderful Life.

Where's Captain Blood? Robin Hood? Sea Hawk? (Whadya mean there's a theme here... I don't know what you're talking about. ;-) Oh, Zorro! HORNBLOWER! You missed HORNBLOWER! Gregory Peck and ships! WHOO-HOO!

Hitchcock? Was there Hitchcock? Birds? Vertigo? Rear Window? The Man Who Knew Too Much?

The Legend of Whiskey Flats was a terrific western comedy. Had everybody and his dog in it. I remember Jim Hutton (*sigh* died much too young) playing a young cavalry officer. So, there we are, in Whiskey Flats somewhere or other. Mining country, IIRC. The horses and dogs were getting shaggy like never before and a long hard winter was predicted. The town leaders got together and decided they had to get supplies in before the first snow. Mostly, they had to make sure they had enough whiskey for the winter. So, the order goes off. Before it's over you've got the Army, some Indians, the guy bringing in the wagonloads of whiskey and the Temperance Ladies determined to put a stop to Demon Drink. At one point, there's a terrible battle and someone shouts to form the wagons into a circle! Then you see the Indians (with subtitles) yelling to form a circle... eventually they pull back and show us a map with all these little circles drawn on it and no one actually engaging anyone else. :-) Very *VERY* funny movie. :-):-)

One more... Sunset Boulevard.

Metropolis for either B&W or SF.

Captain Newman, M.D. under culturally significant as well as Seven Days in May, and Dr. Strangelove.

Andromeda Strain for SciFi.

Where's The Sting, though I kinda resent that being an 'Old Fart' film, along with Cocoon and whatever that other one was. At least I wasn't old enough to vote when The Sting came out.;-) Grumble, grumble, whine.

LOL! Okay, I was trying to keep the list managable to some degree. I could have easily listed 500 good old movies that I love and think everyone should see. There was only so much room tho.

This list was created last year when there was a movie meme going around and probably 90% of the movies on it were no older than 5 years old...and most of which I'd not only NOT seen....I DIDN'T CARE to see them. :oP I think the majority of what comes out of Hollyweird these days is drek, pap and throughly missable.

I think I've seen just about everything else that was mentioned here too and yeah, they could have easily gone on the list. I just listed what I thought was most significant, most entertaining and in many cases, overlooked. Just because you've seen many on the list doesn't make you an old fart...it was just an old fart who created the list!

Please feel free to create your own lists! The more the merrier. This way we can pass the word for those who haven't looked at the older treasures.

Quiet Man = I just don't like John Wayne. I'm not sure I've ever seen one of his movies in its entirety.

I actually just saw Laurence Of Arabia in the past year!

You might be able to tolerate Quiet Man since it's not your typical 'the Duke' kinda movie. He did far more real acting in this one than his usual walk-thru type roles. (Not that I don't like the Duke being the Duke, but I can understand that he eventually just settled into formula because it was easy and lucrative. And I just like the formula inspite of the macho man crap.) It's a real ensemble cast...it just wouldn't work as well without the whole group of supporting characters.
