Old Farts Movie List
Nov. 18th, 2006 11:43 amProperty of [Bad username or unknown identity: delphia2000 Old Farts Movie List (110 Great Films) Mark which of these you've seen and write down the ones you haven't so you can go rent them because if you haven't seen them, you aren't a movie buff by any means…you're just a kid who went to the movies a lot. :o) Sure, there are plenty more films I (delph) could have listed here, but I've tried to choose some that are unknown gems or vastly overlooked, especially older films that I grew up seeing but are not so easily found anymore. Some I just couldn't not list even tho I'm sure most people have seen them. Some could be listed in more than one category, but I put them where I thought they fit best. If there are multiple versions of a movie, in most cases, I mean the original, not the remakes. If you're a color snob, I suggest you educate yourself to the beauty of black and white. If you've never seen a silent, you have my deepest sympathy. :o) Classics in B/W (15) (x) Casablanca ( ) The Quiet Man (x) Tarzan (Weismuller) (x) The Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari (silent) (x) King Kong (x) The Philadelphia Story (x) The Scarlet Pimpernel (x) Laura (x) Birth of a Nation (silent) (x) Citizen Kane (x) Murder My Sweet (x) It Happened One Night (x) The Maltese Falcon (x) The Best Years of our Lives (x) Cheaper By The Dozen Culturally Significant (15) ( ) Medicine Man ( ) Ghandi (x) The Great Escape ( ) Joe ( ) Panic in Needle Park ( ) Hair (x) The Man With the Golden Arm ( ) The Hospital ( ) Knightriders (x) Gone With The Wind (x) The Way West ( ) The Buccaneer (x) Midsummers Night's Dream (1935) (x) MASH (x) Oh God Real Horror/Suspense (10) (x) Karloff's Frankenstein (x) Lugosi's Dracula ( ) Road Games (x) Rear Window (x) The Birds (x) Rebecca (x) The Haunting of Hill House ( ) Something Wicked This Way Comes (x) Westworld (x) Wait Until Dark Great Sci Fi (10) ( ) Omega Man ( ) Soylent Green (x) 2001: A Space Oddessy ( ) 12 Monkeys ( ) Battle Beyond the Stars (x) The Day The Earth Stood Still (x) War of the Worlds (original) (x) The Time Machine (x) Cocoon (x) Forbidden Planet Westerns (10) ( ) Silverado (x) The Searchers ( ) True Grit ( ) Cheyenne Autumn ( ) The Flaming Star ( ) The Magnificent 7 ( ) Stagecoach ( ) The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance ( ) Cat Ballou ( ) A Man Called Horse The Funny Stuff (10) (x) A Fish Called Wanda (x) Young Frankenstein (x) The Canterville Ghost (x) Bringing Up Baby ( ) It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (x) The Russians are Coming.. Date: Nov. 19th, 2006 02:29 am (UTC)There's no Abbott&Costello. Someone already mentioned the lack of Marx Brothers. Where're the Hope & Crosby Road Movies? I used to love it when one of the local stations played marathons of those. :-)
Also, missing, as noted previously, It's a Wonderful Life.
Where's Captain Blood? Robin Hood? Sea Hawk? (Whadya mean there's a theme here... I don't know what you're talking about. ;-) Oh, Zorro! HORNBLOWER! You missed HORNBLOWER! Gregory Peck and ships! WHOO-HOO!
Hitchcock? Was there Hitchcock? Birds? Vertigo? Rear Window? The Man Who Knew Too Much?
Umm... Arsenic and Old Lace. Topper. HARVEY! You forgot *HARVEY!* "There goes a man with his feet planted firmly in mid-air."
Secret Life of Walter Mitty. Seven Year Itch. Some Like it Hot.
Holiday Inn. White Christmas. Sound of Music. Singin' in the Rain. A Christmas Carol.
Umm... I know there are others. Umm...Oh! Jason and the Argonauts! Ray Harryhausen is a *god*!
*sigh* I need to put most of these on my Christmas list.:-)
Oh! One more! The Uninvited. Ray Milland with hair. ;-) And another!!! Portrait of Jenny.

(that's okay, otherwise, you have excellent taste in the classics)

Date: Nov. 19th, 2006 03:00 am (UTC)Captain Newman, M.D. under culturally significant as well as Seven Days in May, and Dr. Strangelove.
Andromeda Strain for SciFi.
Where's The Sting, though I kinda resent that being an 'Old Fart' film, along with Cocoon and whatever that other one was. At least I wasn't old enough to vote when The Sting came out.;-) Grumble, grumble, whine.

Date: Nov. 19th, 2006 03:28 am (UTC)This list was created last year when there was a movie meme going around and probably 90% of the movies on it were no older than 5 years old...and most of which I'd not only NOT seen....I DIDN'T CARE to see them. :oP I think the majority of what comes out of Hollyweird these days is drek, pap and throughly missable.
I think I've seen just about everything else that was mentioned here too and yeah, they could have easily gone on the list. I just listed what I thought was most significant, most entertaining and in many cases, overlooked. Just because you've seen many on the list doesn't make you an old fart...it was just an old fart who created the list!
Please feel free to create your own lists! The more the merrier. This way we can pass the word for those who haven't looked at the older treasures.

Date: Nov. 19th, 2006 05:26 pm (UTC)Quiet Man = I just don't like John Wayne. I'm not sure I've ever seen one of his movies in its entirety.
I actually just saw Laurence Of Arabia in the past year!
