10 Weird Things About Me

RULES: Each player of this game starts off with 10 weird things/habits about yourself. People who get tagged need to write a blog of their own 10 weird habits/things as well as state this rule clearly. At the end you need to choose 6 people to be tagged and list their names.
BTW, this is all
riverfox's fault.
1. I have distal hyperextensibility of the thumbs. (aka hitchhiker's thumb) This came in remarkably handy when I played the bassoon.
2. I count stairs when I'm climbing them. I've gotten some strange looks when I say things like "I have fifteen stairs at home."
3. When I eat, I have to blow my nose. I inherited this disorder from my mother. Eating makes my nose run!
4. My head is crooked. Now, let me finish! *g* My HS homeroom teacher inspected us all as we waited to proceed into the auditorium for graduation ceremonies. He reached up and straightened my cap. With the point facing properly forward, the cap was no longer sitting snugly on my head, and I spent the rest of the afternoon reaching up to rescue it when it threatened to slide off.
5. I was apparently born left-handed. In JH gym class we were told to line up, right-handers here, left-handers here. I got in the right-handed line, ran forward to scissor-kick over the bar, and found the wrong leg going up into the air. I aborted and moved to the back of the left-handers line. When I told my mother what had happened, she got the strangest look on her face. When I was laying in my crib, I always reached for the dangling toys on the left, so Mom tied those up out of the way, because she didn't want me to be left-handed, and I started using my right hand to reach for the remaining toys. But I'm still left-footed, and do a few things left-handed, like pouring into a measuring cup, opening jar lids, unlocking doors.
6. I tend to do things in fours. Four cookies on the plate, four beats when I tap my fingers. It just seems to be the most natural number to me. If anyone asks what my lucky number is, I'll say four, even though I don't believe in lucky numbers.
7. I used to shoplift when I was a kid. Actually, it was more like a "Buy one, get one free" system. One candybar went into my coat pocket and one went on the counter to be purchased. I have no idea when I stopped, or why. I guess I just outgrew it.
8. My brunette hair starting turning white when I was about 12 or 13 years old, just a few strands at a time. By the time I graduated from HS, I had white streaks in the front that reached almost to my waist. These days I'm a blonde. *g*
9. I have psychic abilities. *cue scary music* Not that they do me any good, but I have had dreams that came true (in slightly altered ways), and sometimes I get strong feelings that turn out to be accurate. On Thanksgiving, during a game of Monopoly, I had rolled doubles twice in a row. Three times and you go to jail. I picked up the dice, turned to my nephew, said "I'm going to jail", and rolled a pair of fives. I just knew.
10. I hate the texture of velvet. Imagine what it would be like to lick the stuff, and that's kind of what I feel when I touch it. I get a hot, prickly sensation on my tongue, and from my fingertips up the inside of my arm to above the wrist. Really unpleasant. I've never heard anything similar from anyone else. It did actually give me an idea for a scifi story, with aliens, and, er, me. I'll just leave it at that.
I won't tag anyone, but do it if you want to!

Date: Dec. 3rd, 2006 08:34 pm (UTC)My ex also has the nose running thing from eating. My mother will often sneeze when she eats, for no reason we've ever been able to figure out.
Being right handed and left footed isn't all that uncommon. Odds are, if you really were born left-handed, it would have taken much more to make you switch. More likely you just swing both ways, as it were. ;-) I do some things left-handed because my mother is and that's how she taught me to do them. I've been told I tie my shoes left-handed but I can't really tell. :-) These days it all depends on which hand hurts the least as to which is dominant...except for writing. :-) When it comes to writing my left-hand is mostly useless except for helping to keep the paper on the table. My daughter is right-footed, handed and eyed. I'm right-eyed, handed and left-footed. It's likely the primary reason I tend to trip over my own feet.

Date: Dec. 3rd, 2006 08:55 pm (UTC)In the gym class thing, only one other girl had to switch lines, so it's not terribly common. Hmm, I knew at one point which eye I favored, but there's no way to do the test now (whatever it was), because I have a cataract in my right eye.
I've recently wondered, and never asked anyone else, if we lace our fingers together when we fold our hands based on handedness. I wind up with my left thumb on top, but I don't know if that means anything. :-)

Date: Dec. 3rd, 2006 09:09 pm (UTC)It just feels completely wrong and alien to clasp hands the other way. It's like the fingers don't even fit together!

EEK! RDA thumbs ... way cool! :D

I think the deal with RDA's thumbs is that they're permanently bent, whereas I CAN bend mine. Come to think of it, don't his bend the other way? *visualizes* Yes, the top part of his thumb curves IN, I think. Mine bends back.
I need to find some RDA hand porn to verify this! LOL

Date: Dec. 4th, 2006 06:30 am (UTC)My thumb looks perfectly normal, until I make the traditional "hitching a ride" gesture. Then the top joint bends away from my hand in about an 80 degree angle.

Me too! It's a symptom, in my case, of allergic rhinitis. Or deviated nasal septum. I can't remember. *gg*
I hate stroking velvet against the grain. Drives me nuts. Don't know why.
And I'm a leftie, too. :) My psychic sense I tend to judge as uber-instinctual. Even though I'm a Wiccan. ;)

Date: Dec. 4th, 2006 04:54 am (UTC)I remember as a child getting birthday cards that had kittens on them, or whatever, that were furry. Not velvet, but along the same lines. Ooh, and ten times worse as far as my reaction to it went. *shudders*

Date: Dec. 4th, 2006 05:20 am (UTC)Pretty much. ;) In my case, a fog horn. :-p
I remember those cards with that weird texture on them. I'd rub the damn thing till the "fur" came off. :-p Someone once gave me a card with lace and silk on it. I left that one alone. *g*
