THE OPEN SECRET
“Carter? How’re you feeling?”
“Carter? How’re you feeling?”
“I’m fine, sir. Janet doesn’t seem to want to believe that, though.” Sam gave her doctor an annoyed look.
“Well, you were hit by a wave of energy from a piece of alien technology,” Daniel pointed out from the foot of the bed.
“But I feel fine!” And she really did. It wasn’t like she’d lost consciousness or anything.
“Better to play it safe,” Jack said, shrugging.
“Thank you, Colonel,” Janet said. “Unless someone can tell me what that piece of technology is meant to do and how it works, all I can do is keep the major under observation until I’m satisfied that there are no side-effects.”
Sam rolled her eyes. “I can’t read minds or see through walls or turn invisible, if that’s what you mean.”
“Predict the future?” Jack asked. Sam glared. “Just checking.”
“Too bad,” Daniel chuckled. “That could come in handy.”
Janet looked up from Sam’s chart. “I don’t need any alien technology to predict your future, Colonel. Or Daniel’s.”
“Oh?” Jack asked warily, while Daniel’s eyebrows shot up.
“I’m seeing adjoining rocking chairs on the porch of the retirement home. Daniel’s rambling on about something he saw on the History Channel while you watch the parade of little old ladies strolling by with their walkers.”
Jack sniffed, and Daniel began to smile.
“Is the colonel winking at the old ladies, Janet?” Sam grinned at her friend.
“He is! And they stop for a second, and smile, and then they move on, shaking their heads because it’s just a shame that such handsome gentlemen are both taken.”
There was a silence, and Sam held her breath.
Daniel blinked and Jack stood a little straighter. “Taken?” they asked, with identical expressions.
Janet pinched her under the bedsheet, and Sam burst into laughter.
