There's no way I tossed and turned for two whole hours. I must have been asleep part of that time. *peers at bizarre little (280 word) fic curiously*
ROCK-A-BYE
Jack rocks in his cradle and it’s dark and quiet as the sun shines and he can hear fish sizzling in the kitchen and a small piping voice that becomes a light baritone and the cradle tips and Jack falls into the water and
Jack rocks in his cradle and it’s dark and quiet as the sun shines and he can hear fish sizzling in the kitchen and a small piping voice that becomes a light baritone and the cradle tips and Jack falls into the water and
the pillowcase is cool beneath his cheek as the nurses finish rolling him onto his side and
he can smell the fish now and Grandma Alice calls him and he picks up the red plate that was always his and holds it up to be filled as they sit on the porch as the sun sinks and his Mom leans against his Dad on the steps and they swat at each other’s mosquitoes and glide away arm in arm in the dusk and Jack knows that they’ll kiss each other when they round the corner of the cabin and Grandma Alice’s arm is around him and he remembers when he was just nothing but little and he would sit on Grandpa Jim’s lap and rub with fascination at the stump where he'd lost part of a finger chopping wood and he always smelled chocolaty from his pipe tobacco and the mosquitoes are eating him alive as
a nurse draws blood for more tests and
Jack is naked and being kissed and Grandma Alice is dim and long ago but the owl outside the cabin window sounds like it could still be the same one and
Daniel twitches the sheet into place and smoothes it down and
Jack drifts away cradling Daniel in his arms content and oblivious as
monitors beep and IVs drip and little pieces of Daniel’s hope die and are reborn each day….
