Fuck this winter, srsly
Jan. 3rd, 2014 11:15 amWe've had about ten inches of snow starting New Year's Eve, on top of what was already on the ground. Now this from the National Weather Service:
DANGEROUSLY COLD AIR WILL MOVE INTO THE REGION LATE SATURDAY NIGHT AND SUNDAY... BECOMING LIFE-THREATENING SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY MORNING. WIND CHILLS WILL DROP TO 20 TO 25 BELOW ZERO LATE SATURDAY NIGHT AND SUNDAY... THEN PLUMMET TO 40 TO 50 BELOW BY MONDAY MORNING AND AGAIN TUESDAY MORNING. ONLY SLIGHT IMPROVEMENT IS EXPECTED DURING THE DAY MONDAY AND TUESDAY. THIS WILL BE THE COLDEST AIR WE HAVE EXPERIENCED SINCE THE ARCTIC BLAST IN FEBRUARY OF 1996... ABOUT 18 YEARS AGO.
ETA: It's now forecast to be 40 to 55 below zero wind chills. Schools are closed, thank goodness.

Stay safe and warm!

Date: Jan. 3rd, 2014 11:24 pm (UTC)On the bright side, they've sensibly canceled school for Monday at least. And I've just seen that the city's calling for volunteers to take down the Nativity display on the Square tomorrow when the temps will be in the high 20s, instead of waiting for the traditional Jan. 7th date, when it would be dangerous.

Date: Jan. 4th, 2014 07:15 am (UTC)Yeah, I've heard somewhere that Celsius and Fahrenheit kind of meet up when it gets that frigid. Guess you proved it was true!

Date: Jan. 4th, 2014 10:36 am (UTC)Most of all, will your heating still work?
Also: should you like fingerless gloves knitted for next year?

Date: Jan. 4th, 2014 03:47 pm (UTC)Fingers are crossed that no one has to suffer through a power failure during this...especially me! I already know that my furnace will not be able to keep up, but I have tons of warm things to huddle up under for the duration. I'm predicting my house will hover at about 60 degrees, which is chilly but perfectly safe.
I will get back to you on the fingerless gloves. *g*

Date: Jan. 5th, 2014 04:23 pm (UTC)I have an extra blanket on the bed, and two comforters that I can add or use when I'm downstairs. Put on two pair of socks this morning, just to be ready. The nasty stuff is still hours away.
In really important news, I have a little clip-on light for reading, and new Hornblower and Temeraire books that I bought with a Christmas Barnes & Noble gift card. :-)

I'm a worrier by nature, but I don't think there's any doubt that it's going to be just as bad as they say. But over soon! That's the bright spot. :-)

Okay, time to go out for a spot of shopping while my car will still start and I won't lose any fingers or toes! The really big chill is still more than 24 hours away...
